If you’ve been making cards long, you have likely tried your hand at embossing. There are several kinds of embossing including heat embossing and dry embossing with a machine and embossing folders. Today I want to share a new way to dry emboss, that doesn’t require using a machine. It’s a fun little technique to play around with. I’m also sharing two new hybrid embossing folders – Stampin Up Thoughtful Moments and Adoring Hearts – which inspired me to share these fun embossing techniques today. Let’s take a look!
Embossing Basics
If you’re new to embossing, the traditional technique involves putting a piece of paper inside a plastic embossing folder and running it through a machine. You can find all the details here.
Now let’s talk about another, simpler way to emboss!
Embossing Without A Machine
Materials Needed
The only supplies you’ll need are a foam mat and a stylus or Take Your Pick tool. Next I’ll share what to do with them.
How To
First, stamp a design onto a piece of cardstock. Then grab your stylus and foam pad. Using the stylus, press against the paper and move the stylus, using the stamp as a guide. For this example I created an outline around the balloons.
When you flip the paper over, you can see the outline!
On this one I chose to stamp inside the embossed area, but this only works with stamps that are symmetrical.
Here’s another example with the adorable Trucking Along bundle. I applied ink with a blending brush, and it highlighted the raised areas.
Imagine the possibilities. You could do this with large background stamps, greetings, borders, animals, and more.
Stampin Up Thoughtful Moments & Adoring Hearts
Here is another fun way to emboss! We have two new hybrid embossing folders which include the folder plus a coordinating die to cut out the embossed pieces.
This is the Thoughtful Moments Hybrid Embossing Folder.
And here is the Adoring Hearts Hybrid Embossing Folder.
To use these folders as designed, you’ll want to run a piece of cardstock through the machine with the embossing folder first, then run the same piece back through using the dies. After the pieces are created, you can play around with applying some ink to the raised areas with blending brushes, sponges, or a brayer.
Next let’s take a look at the cards I created.
