It’s been so long since I’ve shared a project using our lovely pastels, but it’s finally time for another one! The technique I’m using today is SO pretty, and I really encourage you to try it soon. I’m calling it pastel dabbing and I tried it out with the Stampin Up Painted Pheasant and Soft Seedlings stamp sets. Let’s take a look at it.

Featured Stamps
The stamps I used for today’s projects include the Painted Pheasant and Soft Seedlings stamps. Natural stamps really lend themselves to the technique I’m sharing today, and these were perfect.
Here you can see the Painted Pheasant stamp set along with the Aspen Trees dies that I used for the pheasant card.
Here is the Soft Seedlings stamp set with the Leaf Fall embossing folder which I used on both of the cards.
Intro To Pastels
If you’re new to using pastels, you may want to take a look here where I shared a really nice introduction to them along with seven different ways to use them. Today I’m focusing on one of these techniques.
Pastel Dabbing Technique
To ‘dab’ with pastels, do the following.
1. Use a Take Your Pick Tool to shave several colors of chalk onto a silicone craft sheet.
2. Stamp onto your project with Versamark ink.
3. Use sponge daubers to ‘dab’ chalk over the stamped image.
That’s it for the basic technique, pretty simple. I’ll share a few tips below.
Pastel Dabbing Tips
1. When done, hold your project upside down over a trash can and flick the back with your finger to remove excess chalk.
2. If you have a soft hazy glow around your image, you can use your finger or a clean dauber to remove most of it.
3. It is possible to blend colors by mixing different colors of chalk. I wanted brown for the pheasant, but brown is not part of my set of pastels. I created brown by using yellow, red, and green mixed together.
Pastel Dabbing Card Samples
Here is the card I created with the Soft Seedlings stamp set. I chose a dark color of cardstock to show that the color of the pastels will show over dark colors.
Here is the Painted Pheasant card.
I’m having a hard time deciding which of these cards is my favorite. Comment at the bottom and tell me which one you like best!

Thanks so much Anne! I hope you have a wonderful day 🙂
Becky Crocker says
Lovely cards, how do you “set” the chalk so the image doesn’t rub off? Thanks.
Anna Helman says
Hi Becky, you can spray it lightly with a clear spray paint or I’ve also heard that hair spray works.
