One of my favorite traditions at the church I attend happens tonight on Christmas Eve. At the end of the service, we form a circle all the way around the church. Each person holds a candle. The lights are turned down and beginning at the front of the church, a flame is passed from person to person until each person holds a lit candle. The bell choir begins playing Silent Night and the congregation joins in singing. It is probably one of the most peaceful and calm moments I experience each year. I’m sure the only way to get the full effect is to be there, but if you can imagine it, maybe you can feel a little bit of the magic from where you are.
Here is the Silent Night card I made in honor of Christmas Eve and our singing of Silent Night this evening at church. Do you ever imagine what it was like to be there?
Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Glories stream from heaven afar
Christ the Saviour is born,
Christ the Saviour is born.
Son of God, love’s pure light,
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
