The other day, I shared with you how to make a cute owl card with the Stampin Up Have a Hoot Stamp Set. I was inspired by this card to share with you three paper saving tips to get more use from your beautiful papers! You can use these tips to eliminate the waste of all your big beautiful paper and save money doing so – Cha-Ching!
Below, I’ve listed out three techniques you can use to save paper. Choose the technique that works best for you, or use all three!
3 Tips For Saving Paper
Tip #1 — Edging Technique
When matting multiple layers of paper where the lower layer only shows on two edges (see the pine tree print below), use strips of designer paper for the bottom layer instead of a full piece of paper. This will allow the designer paper to peek out from the edges without having to use a full piece of the paper.
Tip #2 — Full Mat Technique
If you’d prefer to have a full mat look when making cards, where the lower layer fully surrounds the upper layer, reach for a die from Stampin Up’s Stitched So Sweetly or Stitched Rectangles sets. These are perfect for cutting out the center of your paper. You can use the outer frame for matting, and the inner piece for another project!

Tip #3 — Paper Trimmer Method
If you don’t have a die cutting machine, I have a tip for saving paper with a trimmer! Line up your paper allowing 3/4″ to the right of the cutting blade. Using the rulers on the clear cutting arm, make a cut beginning 3/4″ in from the top of the paper (as shown in the photo below) to 3/4″ from the bottom of the paper. DO NOT cut fully from top to bottom. See the next photo below for a picture of the end result.
Repeat the process described above for each edge. Pop out the center section and use the outer portion as your mat!
Here’s a look at the final product. It appears to be a full piece of glimmer paper!
Here’s a recap of the materials I used to accomplish the three techniques above.
Materials
- Stitched So Sweetly Dies
- Stitched Rectangle Dies
- Die Cutting Machine
- Paper Trimmer
